After having served his time as an apprentice in Gallaghers Drapery Store in Strabane, James Tully Snr’s desire for retail continued with the renting of a premises at No.20 West Street in December 1923 and the subsequent opening of his first store in January 1924.

Even during difficult times his business flourished, and after a few years, he purchased the premises from the landlord.

In 1955 the opportunity arose to expand the business by renting the premises next door – No.19 West St., which he duly did. Ever the resourceful businessman, he knocked a hole in the wall between the two buildings to facilitate the ease of running his drapery store! Again, following the success and growth of his business, he purchased No.19 as well.

A few years later his sons Hubert and Jim took over the day-to-day running of the business.

1981 saw Hubert Tully branching out on his own, opening a store at No.87 West St., primarily catering for knitting wools, haberdashery, and bed linen.

And his second store in 1985 at No.110/111 West St., catering for ladies’ fashion, footwear, and underwear, run by his son Greg, all on Drogheda’s famous Golden Mile.

Then with the growth of Drogheda and its hinterland and the opening of the M1, coupled with the planned pedestrianisation of West Street, Hubert recognised the potential of a third store to cater for the increased demand for top-quality soft furnishings and in 2006 opened in the M1 Retail Park.

But it was not all plain sailing. The stores on West Street fell victim to the recession in 2010.

The business is currently located in the M1 Retail Park in a large modern open-plan store.

With ease of access and plentiful free parking, it is a favourite destination of shoppers from the northeast of Ireland.

Tullys continues to be one of Drogheda’s oldest and most loved family businesses, with Hubert’s daughters Tara, Kerry, and his son Barry involved in running the business.

A cornerstone of our business, without question, has to be our fantastic staff, without whom we would not exist. They have been the face of Tullys all down through the years. We have been incredibly lucky to have had on board some of the best staff a business could wish for!

2019 saw the business celebrating 95 years of serving the people of Drogheda.

It continues to offer quality goods with a very friendly customer service experience.
